How to Install Max for Live Devices in Ableton Live

Installing a Max for Live device is quick once you know the steps. Unlike VST or AU plugins, Max for Live devices are single .amxd files that live inside your Ableton project — there's no installer to run. This guide walks through it from download to first sound.

What you need first

Max for Live devices only run in Ableton Live Suite, or in Standard/Intro with the paid Max for Live add-on. Max itself is bundled — you don't install it separately. Check Live → Preferences → Library to confirm Max for Live shows a version number. If it does, you're ready.

Step by step

  1. Download the device. Find a device on max4.live and open its page, then follow the link to maxforlive.com to download the .amxd file. Note whether it's an Audio Effect, Instrument, or MIDI Effect — that determines which track it goes on.
  2. Unzip if needed. Some downloads are .zip archives containing the .amxd plus samples or presets. Unzip first, keeping the folder together.
  3. Drag it onto a track. The simplest method: drag the .amxd file straight from Finder/Explorer onto an Audio track (for Audio Effects and Instruments) or a MIDI track (for MIDI Effects). Instruments and MIDI Effects need a MIDI track; Audio Effects go on either.
  4. Or add it to your User Library. To reuse a device across projects, copy it into User Library → Presets → (Audio/MIDI) Effects or Instruments. It'll then appear in Live's browser under Places.

Common problems

"The device could not be loaded." Usually a Live/Max version mismatch — a device built for a newer Live may not open in an older one. Check the device's stated Live and Max versions on its max4.live page.

Missing samples or the device shows an error. Keep the whole unzipped folder together; some devices reference bundled files by relative path.

It loads but makes no sound. For an Instrument, make sure the MIDI track is armed and receiving notes. For a MIDI Effect, remember it processes notes before the instrument — it needs an instrument after it in the chain.
