How to Update Max for Live Devices to a New Version

Device authors regularly release new versions with fixes and features. Because Max for Live devices aren't managed by an installer, updating is a manual — but simple — process. Here's how to do it without breaking your projects.

How to know there's an update

Each device page shows the current version number and when it was last updated. Compare that with the version loaded in your project (many devices display their version in the title bar or an info panel). On max4.live you can sort listings by newest to spot recently updated devices.

Updating a device

  1. Download the new version from the device's page on maxforlive.com.
  2. Replace it in your User Library. If you keep devices in User Library → Presets, swap the old .amxd for the new one (same location). New projects will pick up the update automatically.
  3. Update existing projects deliberately. Projects that already contain the old device keep using it — Live embeds a copy. To upgrade, drag the new version onto the track and re-dial your settings, then remove the old one. Devices rarely migrate settings automatically between versions.

A safety habit

Before replacing a device in a project you care about, save a copy of the project first, or freeze/flatten the track to audio. That way, if the new version behaves differently, you haven't lost the sound you had.

Keeping presets

If a device stores presets as separate files, keep them — most updates remain preset-compatible. When they don't, the author usually notes it in the changelog or device comments, which you can read on the device's page.
