Max for Live CPU & Performance Tips
Max for Live opens up huge creative possibilities, but some devices are heavier on your CPU than Live's native ones. A few habits keep your sessions smooth even when you lean on Max for Live.
Why some devices are CPU-hungry
Max for Live devices run in the Max engine, and complex ones — granular processors, spectral effects, dense generative patches — do a lot of real-time computation. Others are extremely light. Device comments and the download count on each page often hint at how demanding a device is.
Freeze and flatten
Once you're happy with a track that uses a heavy device, Freeze it (right-click the track → Freeze Track). Live renders it to audio and stops computing the device in real time. Flatten to make it permanent. This is the single most effective way to reclaim CPU.
Resample instead of running live
For generative or evolving devices, record their output to an audio or MIDI clip, then disable the device. You keep the result without the ongoing CPU cost — and you can edit the captured material.
Manage device count
- Don't stack many instances of a heavy device — use sends/returns to share one effect across tracks where possible.
- Increase your audio buffer size while mixing (lower it only when you need tight playing latency).
- Prefer well-optimised, well-rated devices; check the best devices list, where community favourites tend to be the more polished ones.
