Euclidean sequencing is a small idea with a large output: spread a number of hits as evenly as possible across a number of steps, and you get patterns that feel both mechanical and off-grid. Three hits in eight steps, five in sixteen, seven in twelve \u2014 each one lands somewhere between a straight beat and a hand-played groove. Because it's a MIDI Effect, POLYRHYTHMUS goes on a MIDI track, to the left of whatever instrument you're driving. Everything downstream of it \u2014 an Instrument Rack, a Drum Rack, an external hardware synth over a MIDI port \u2014 hears whatever it emits.
Two practical setup notes before you start twisting things:
- Arm the track and leave the clip slot empty first. If the device runs on its own against Live's transport, you'll hear it immediately. If it needs incoming notes to chew on, a one-bar clip holding a single long note is the cheapest possible fuel and costs you nothing to try.
- Put a Scale device after it if you're using it melodically. Generative note streams and a fixed key signature are much easier friends when Live's stock Scale is doing the policing.
The other thing worth doing early: route the track's MIDI output to a second MIDI track, arm that, and record. Once you have a pattern you like, you want it as clips, not as a live process you have to reproduce from memory. Generative devices are much more useful when you treat them as idea generators feeding a normal arrangement.
Three sessions where it earns its slot
A percussion bed built from three tracks. Instead of one instance driving a full Drum Rack, use three MIDI tracks, each with its own POLYRHYTHMUS, each feeding a single sound: a rim, a shaker, a low tom. Give each one a different cycle length. The patterns will drift in and out of alignment over several bars, which is the entire point \u2014 you get a percussion loop that doesn't repeat every bar without you writing a single note. Record eight bars of the result to audio and you have a loop with genuine long-form movement.
Melodic pulses under a pad. Feed a plucky, short-decay instrument \u2014 a filtered Operator patch, a Simpler with a tight amp envelope \u2014 and follow the device with Scale locked to whatever key your track is in. What you're after here isn't a melody, it's a rhythmic bed of pitched blips that sits under a chord progression. Automate the number of hits over the arrangement: sparse in verses, denser going into a drop. Even if the device itself isn't automatable in every respect, you can duplicate the track with different settings and crossfade between them.

It also means the device is stable enough that a large number of producers loaded it, used it, and had nothing to complain about \u2014 which is not the norm for free Max for Live sequencers.
The caveat is age. Version 1.01 dates from October 2017, and the listing was built against Live 9.1.2 and Max 6.1.7. Devices of that vintage usually still load in current Live versions, but you should treat that as something to verify on your own system before you build a set around it, and be prepared for the interface to feel small on a high-DPI display. The author's own note explains the situation honestly: POLYRHYTHMUS 2 was close to finished in January 2016, freelance work took priority, and the donation model didn't cover the gap. It's on hiatus. MDD SnAkE by maximedangles is the modern option, built against Live 10.1.25 and Max 8.1.3, updated through late 2020. ML-185 Stage Controlled Sequencer by 3st is the analogue-style alternative: eight configurable stages, three layers for pitch, velocity and an aux layer (pitch bend or CC), four play modes per stage, and variable stage lengths from one to eight clock pulses. Variable stage length is another way to get patterns that don't line up to the bar. It dates from 2009 and sits at version 0.9, but it's shared under plain Attribution, which is the most permissive license of the four if you want to build on it.

Who should skip it
Skip POLYRHYTHMUS if you need something you can rely on across future Live updates \u2014 a device frozen at 2017 with an author on stated hiatus is not the foundation for a touring set. Skip it if your workflow is about precise, editable patterns rather than emergent ones; Advanced Step Sequencer will frustrate you less. And skip it if you're already deep in a standalone sequencer or hardware setup, which is exactly the reason the author gave for stepping away from it himself.
Everyone else: it's free, it's five stars from a very large sample, and it takes about ninety seconds to find out whether euclidean generation is a tool you think in. Start with three tracks, three instances, three different cycle lengths, and one percussion sound each.
