skinnerbox: Live as a Hub for Hardware, Hands and Chance
Fourteen devices, 168,501 downloads between them, and a release history that runs from 2010 to a 2025 update. The skinnerbox catalogue is one of the older continuous bodies of work on the Max for Live scene, and it has a clear shape: almost everything here exists to connect Live to something outside itself \u2014 a modular rig, a vintage synth, a MIDI controller, or a performer making decisions in real time.
The through-line: Live is the hub, not the whole studio
Sort the devices by what problem they solve and three clusters appear.
- Hardware bridges. CV out, gate and trigger generation, MIDI-to-CV for specific instruments, analog clock in. Four of the fourteen devices do nothing but get signal across the boundary between Live and a rack of voltage.
- Mapping and modulation plumbing. Devices that take a source \u2014 an audio signal, a controller knob \u2014 and shape it before it lands on a Live parameter.
- Performance memory and cutting. Snapshot tools for Session View improvisation, and a slicer that rethinks how Simpler handles a long file.
What they share is restraint. These are mostly small, single-purpose patches with a help file and a demo, not sprawling instruments with forty parameters. If you have used a lot of Max for Live, you will recognise the type: the device you install once, forget the interface of, and never remove from the set because it is holding two pieces of gear together.
One practical note before the tour. Several of these devices were built for Live 8 and Max 5, and the catalogue entries still list those versions. Expect Max to convert the older patches when you open them in a current Live, and expect the oldest ones to be less polished than the 2015\u20132017 batch. Licensing also varies: some are unlicensed, several carry Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives, which means using them in your own work is fine but redistributing modified versions is not.
STING: the outlier at 131,439 downloads
STING by SKINNERBOX accounts for roughly four fifths of the author's total downloads on its own. It arrived in August 2017 as a MIDI effect, holds a 5/5 rating across 24 comments, and was last touched in July 2025 \u2014 that update being the notice that this version is discontinued and superseded by Sting 2, which lives elsewhere in the maxforlive library.
So the honest framing is this: the page is now a signpost. The rating and the comment thread tell you the original had a real following, and the fact that the author came back nearly eight years later to redirect people rather than let the page rot says something about how it is maintained. If you land there, read the notice first and follow it to the current version rather than building a set around a patch its own author has retired.
That leaves the rest of the catalogue \u2014 around 37,000 downloads spread over thirteen devices \u2014 as the part worth digging into, and it is more interesting than the headline number suggests.
Getting Live in and out of a modular rig
cv4live by skinnerbox is the most complete statement of the hardware-bridge idea. It translates an incoming audio signal into control information for any Live parameter, and the accompanying Clock4Live handles analog clocks and triggers going the other way \u2014 setting Live's tempo from hardware, modulating samples with a hardware LFO, firing one-shots from a Eurorack sequencer. Audio effect, 5/5, 2,935 downloads. The framing in its own description is exact: Live as an extension of your modular, rather than the master everything else obeys.
Trigger Tailor solves the smaller, more annoying half of the same problem. It generates a trigger signal of variable length, measured in samples, from incoming MIDI notes, so you can sync Volcas, Eurorack modules or anything else expecting a pulse without keeping a folder of rimshot samples around for the purpose. There is an \"O\" button to fire a trigger by hand, which is exactly the kind of detail that shows the device was built by someone debugging a live rig at 2am.
Two more are deliberately narrow. sbx.jp6.pb.cv receives 14-bit pitch bend data and sends CV to control the VCA and VCF of a Jupiter 6 \u2014 the description allows that it will probably work with other synths, and requires a DC-coupled interface such as a MOTU. AntiDrone is MIDI-to-CV calibrated for the Buchla 258 oscillators in EMS studio 3, again needing a MOTU interface, with CV on the left channel and gate or trigger on the right, plus auto glide. You will also need a minijack-to-banana adapter. That is about as specific as a public device gets, and it is a useful reminder that a lot of good Max for Live starts as one person's studio problem.
Modulation plumbing: sidechain anything, curve everything
sbx parameter sidechain is from June 2010 and still sitting at 5/5. It takes incoming audio and uses it to modulate any parameter of any device or plugin in Live, with envelope, offset and EQ controls on the detection side. The EQ matters more than it sounds: it lets you key off the kick in a full drum bus rather than the whole mix. Route a drum group into it, map its output to a filter cutoff, a send level, a plugin's wet knob \u2014 anything that is not a volume fader, which is where a standard compressor sidechain stops.
CURVE by SKINNERBOX came out of an Ableton Loop 2016 workshop. Map a MIDI controller to its MIDI IN, then map its output to a Live parameter, and use the CURVE control to bend the response logarithmic or exponential. If you have ever had a knob where all the useful movement happens in the first fifth of the travel, this is the fix. It is a one-idea device and the idea is correct.
Snapshots, slicing and sound
memoryBOX captures which clips are playing in Session View so you can come back to that combination later. The author's own description explains the use case well: improvising with a big pool of clips, you build something good on the fly, wander away from it, and want a way back. It covers six channels, and there is a random button that fires a random clip per channel. POLYmemoryBOX is the same device with six snapshot slots instead of one, which turns it from a safety net into a rough arrangement tool \u2014 six sections you can jump between in any order.
Salami Division turns Simpler into a sampler-slicer with functionality along the lines of slice-to-MIDI. Version 1.06 added latency settings for people playing files from a slower drive; if playback is inconsistent, raise the latency number and compensate with negative track delay. With 26 comments it has the liveliest thread of any device here.
Two sound sources round it out. sbx 2049 is an FM-based drum machine, officially released by Ableton, with 12,340 downloads and a 4/5 rating \u2014 the catalogue page points to Ableton's own site for the download. sbx CubicDegrade is a downsampler with a twist, unrated so far, from January 2011.
Where to start
Pick by what is plugged into your desk.
- If you have any hardware with CV or trigger inputs: start with cv4live, then add Trigger Tailor once you need per-device pulse lengths.
- If you work entirely in the box: sbx parameter sidechain first. It is fifteen years old, rated 5/5, and it does something Live still does not do natively in that form.
- If you improvise in Session View: POLYmemoryBOX, and accept that it is a Live 8-era patch built for six channels.
- If you chop breaks or long takes: Salami Division, and read the latency note before you decide it is misbehaving.
- If you are controller-first: CURVE, mapped to the one parameter that has always felt wrong under your fingers.
The catalogue rewards a specific kind of user \u2014 someone whose setup has edges, where Live meets a box that does not speak MIDI, or a performance that does not follow an arrangement.
