The Best Max for Live MIDI Generators Right Now (October 2026)
How these picks were chosen
Two numbers do the work here: the star rating a device carries in the catalogue, and how many times it has been downloaded. Every device in the main list below sits at 5/5. Downloads then break the tie, because a perfect rating from two people means less than a perfect rating from a device that has been pulled down a couple of thousand times.
That bias is worth stating plainly. It favours devices that have been around long enough to collect votes, and it under-rates good new work. The newest releases get their own section at the end, with no claims about quality attached — just what they say they do and who might want to test them.
License information comes from the catalogue entry. Where it reads "None", no license was declared by the author; the Creative Commons variants and the commercial entries are noted where they apply. The full list lives at the MIDI Generator category hub.
Generative sequencers you can leave running
LABYRINTH SEQ by MrPreskovik is the one to try first if you want pattern material that evolves without your hand on it. It is a dual generative MIDI sequencer, freely inspired by the sequencer in the Moog Labyrinth semi-modular released in 2024: two generative sequencers using chance operations to build two paths that twist around each other into polymetric melodies. 2,030 downloads, 5/5, seven comments, last updated July 2025.
The practical use is two voices at once — put one path into a bass or mono synth and the other into something with a long release, and the polymeter does the arranging for you. It runs on Live 10.1.43 and Max 8.1.11, so it is friendly to older setups.
Piano Phase by emerge501 is narrower and better for it. It is a homage to Steve Reich's Piano Phase, built to explore phase shifting, and it was updated as recently as June 2026. 1,338 downloads and a 5/5 rating. Feed it a short cell, send both results to two instances of the same instrument panned apart, and let the drift do the composition. Useful far beyond minimalism: phase-shifted hi-hats or arpeggios give you rhythmic interference patterns no groove template will produce.
If you like this corner of the catalogue, the MK16-185 step sequencer covers the more hands-on, stage-oriented end of the same idea.
Chord and harmony helpers
ExpressiveChordsHelper by Gross9978 has 1,246 downloads and 5/5. Version 1.1 added the ability to generate chord sets based on the Stacks MIDI tool: if the clip already has notes — recorded or drawn — you select them and the device formats them for use with Expressive Chords. If the clip is empty, it generates chords for each note of the scale using the Stacks rules, already formatted. Licensed Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike. It needs Live 12.2 and Max 9.7.
This is a workflow device rather than an idea generator. The win is not having to hand-build the chord material that Expressive Chords expects — you go from an empty clip to a usable set in one pass, then edit.
BABY BLOOMER by jshaw is the free, streamlined version of BLOOMER, a hyper-harmonic chord generator aimed at building emotional progressions quickly. It keeps the core loop: generate chords, shape tension with the emotion curve, audition ideas, export to clip. Advanced features and deeper content are reserved for the paid version. 641 downloads, 5/5, added February 2026, Live 12.0.5 and Max 8.6.2. Licensed Attribution-NoDerivatives.
Treat it as a sketchpad. Export two or three contrasting progressions to clips, then pick a direction rather than agonising over the first one.
Turning non-musical material into notes
Three devices here generate MIDI from something that was not a melody to begin with, and all three are rated 5/5.
- SliceTool by Gross9978 (1,247 downloads) works with Simpler to determine slice length and positions. Version 2.1 reworked that logic so it handles samples of all sizes; the author notes it works with almost any sample in either mode, and recommends clicking Re-sync/Sync and adjusting an observed Simpler parameter such as transient sensitivity if things look off after swapping samples repeatedly. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, Live 12.2, Max 9.0.7.
- PicTool2 by the same author (680 downloads) converts images into note data. It was completely rewritten in JS, with a selectable distribution mode: Fit stretches or compresses notes to fill the selected space or clip, Pic places notes according to the image with a threshold value. You can also stretch the image and make notes legato. Same license and requirements.
- Sfx by Morusque (766 downloads) generates sound effects in MIDI form — bleeps, bursts of noise, simple signals, ringing tones. It builds envelopes for pitch, velocity, polyphony and various modulations, then derives notes from them. As the author points out, the result depends entirely on the instrument you aim it at.
SliceTool is the most immediately practical of the three: drop a break into Simpler, slice, then rearrange. PicTool2 and Sfx are for when you want material you would never have played. Point Sfx at an FM instrument or a short percussive patch rather than a pad — the envelope-derived note data has more character when the sound itself is fast.
Controller and performance-facing picks
MDD Snake with Note Length by an21 is the most downloaded device on this list at 2,704, with a 5/5 rating and four comments. It is an update of the author's gate monitor version for controllers, adding native note length on output while keeping the Map option. Length can be randomised within a minimum and maximum — the pink "length" tab — with a floor of 10 ms and a ceiling of 10,000 ms; the author calls 50–500 ms the standard range and recommends it with synths and pads.
That randomised length window is the part to play with. Set a narrow range for tight stabs, open it to several seconds for overlapping pad voices that never line up the same way twice.
grid composer by orphicinstruments is for monome grid owners specifically: it uses the grid as a direct, tactile interface for working with MIDI clips in Live 12. Add, remove or edit notes from the grid surface, modify a clip's loop points, and navigate Session View. 1,118 downloads, 5/5. If you own the hardware, this turns clip editing into something you do without looking at the screen.
The AI bridge
generative by angelcharge connects Google's Gemini to your MIDI tracks as a composer bridge — melodies, drum patterns, harmonic variations within a given context. It reached 712 downloads and a 5/5 rating since March 2026, with three comments, and it sits at version 0.3.0 on Live 12.4 and Max 9.1.4. The version number is honest about where it is; treat it as a sketching tool and expect it to change.
New this month
Five recent arrivals, none of which have enough votes to judge yet:
- AudioXL ARPEGGIATOR by massimopozzi1989 — inspired by the arpeggiator in the Access Virus B and the first Virus Indigo, with 64 original Virus-style patterns recreated with their rhythmic positions and note lengths. 172 downloads so far and no rating. The obvious candidate for anyone chasing late-90s trance and techno arp behaviour.
- m4l-strudel by alienmind — runs the real @strudel/core engine headlessly inside a MIDI device, bringing the JavaScript port of TidalCycles' pattern language into Live with no browser tab, virtual MIDI cables or sync hacks. Version 0.91, Attribution license. If you already write Tidal or Strudel patterns, this removes the plumbing.
- OTEUCLIDSEQs by TaitoOtani1995 — a Euclidean-geometry-inspired sequencer generating notes across up to 32 steps, with Drum Rack recommended as the target. Attribution license, Live 12.3.6 and Max 9.1.1.
- SeedGen by carlosbtlr — a commercial generator for melodic and harmonic content, built around making variations with a stated emphasis on control and precision.
- MOTYV by escapall — a commercial real-time generator for melodies, chord progressions and arpeggios, built on modal harmony and tension-resolution logic rather than random note generation. It currently carries a 1/5 rating with no downloads recorded, so read the three comments on its page before deciding.
Where to start
If you want one device and no research: LABYRINTH SEQ for generative material, SliceTool if you work from samples, BABY BLOOMER if chords are the bottleneck. All three are free to download and all three sit at 5/5. From there, browse the rest of the category or the wider highest-rated listings.
